Longer than Million Dollar Baby but not quite as long asMarch of the Penguins, Morgan Freeman's two-year road to divorce is finally over -- much to the surprise of family lawyers in divorce. The Academy Award winning actor and go-to documentary narrator's divorce to Myrna Colley-Lee was finalized last week in a Tallahatchie, Mississippi, court house. The details of the divorce, including financial and custody arrangements, have been kept from the press as the court documents remain sealed, but we do know that the case was settled without going to trial. It's an oddly civilized end to a marriage riddled with scandal and shocking accusations.
In August 2008, the world was stunned to hear about a car crash in Mississippi involving Freeman that sent the actor and an unknown woman to the hospital. Freeman left with a broken arm, shoulder damage, a broken elbow and a broken marriage. Days later, Freeman's lawyer announced the actor and his wife of 22 years were getting divorced. The following days after the divorce news broke, the rumor spread that the woman passenger, Demaris Meyer, was having an affair with the Oscar winner, which she tearfully denied. Meyer later slapped Freeman with a lawsuit, claiming the actor was drinking the night of the accident. That suit was settled out of court.
So far, pretty standard fare for a Hollywood divorce. But then things got downright icky. In the summer of 2009, the National Enquirer dropped a bombshell of a story, claiming Freeman had been having a long-term affair with his step-granddaughter, E'Dena Hines. The news of the affair, allegedly, is what prompted Colley-Lee to call off her relationship with Freeman. Photos of Hines and Freeman attending various Hollywood events hit the Internet and the story exploded. All parties involved denied the rumors which later included Hines having Freeman's child.
With the hurricane of his personal life seemingly behind him, Freeman is expected to be featured in numerous upcoming film projects, including Red with Bruce Willis that opens next month and the much-anticipated third film in the Dark Knight series.
